Google Inc. acquired a little known Software Development company back in the summer of 2005, this little know company was Android Inc. The company specialized in producing mobile phone operating systems based on the Linux Operating Kernel. With Googles huge amounts of cash and marketing spend they have managed to breath a new lease of life into the stagnant mobile phone market.

The Android is part of "Open Handset Alliance" which is a group of 34 companies including mobile handset makers, application developers, mobile carriers and chip makers. Mobile phone use has changed a great deal in the past 4 years this is mainly thanks to the huge leaps in usability that Android and the iPhone OS has made. Mobile Phones using these new operating system are just as likely to be used for watch movies on as making mobile phones.

There are many competitors for the Android OS, such as the iPhone OS, however this is restricted to the iPhone and iPod Touch MP3 player and iPad. Palm OS works in a similar way and is also restricted to Palm models. Windows Mobile is another rival, but is only a minor threat for now, with redevelopments in progress and the latest platform soon to be release later in the year. Samsung's Bada OS is also a rival, but is not as advanced as Android has become at present.

With Google on board, Android has been given the best start possible, with funding and a recognised name that is always investing in the future. The Android OS is a bundle of all of the successful features that Google has developed and that are useful on both the web and mobile phones alike. These include Google Search, Google Maps (including GPS), GMail, Google Goggles, Google Voice and Google Apps Marketplace. Apps have become a huge interest for many with thousands of apps available to aid people in everyday life as well as many games available at your fingertips, on your mobile phone.

The number of Android phones is increasing all the time with the following available at present: HTC Desire, HTC Legend, Google Nexus One, Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone. There is barely a day that goes
